We have a new candidate for worst person in the world: Brazilian garbageman Jadson James Franca, who hit a dog with his garbage truck, breaking two of its legs, and then put the animal in his truck’s compacting mechanism and drove away.
A photographer snapped several photos of the incident and posted them online, but the revealing images hit critical mass when they were re-shared by Brazilian TV presenter Xuxa.
The dog was still alive when the truck arrived at the trash company’s facilities, but it died a few hours later.
“This little dog, which was crossing the street without interfering with anyone, had his legs broken” and was in “agonizing pain,” writes Xuxa. The dog was “tied up and pulled by the neck, before being brutally murdered by this individual.”
The pictures successfully got the attention of the area mayor, Neilson da Cruz, who said that Franca would be fired from his job and the trash company, ViaLimpa, would be fined. The amount which Franca will be fined has not been released, but Xuxa’s Facebook post suggested it was around 3,000 Brazilian real, or roughly $950.
Mayor da Cruz also criticized the observers and other garbagemen who didn’t do anything to prevent the dog’s murder, choosing instead to take pictures and gawk.
“These people are more preoccupied with making recordings than with saving the animals,” he said. “This is an absurdity.”
Franca said he was acting with kindness and mercy in treating the injured dog this way, but there’s no mercy to be found in having your legs broken and being crushed in a garbage truck.
Franca has been charged with aggravated cruelty to animals.
