Making DIY makeup using Crayola products is a time-honored Internet tradition. For instance, when you search “Crayola makeup” on YouTube, it turns up more than 9,000 results. But Crayola would appreciate it if you stopped doing that, please.

The colorful company posted an FAQ on its website saying that it does not condone the use of its products as makeup, despite the fact that the crayons are labeled as “non-toxic.”

Is it safe to use CrayolaCrayons to make lipstick, eyeliner and othermakeup?

As the manufacturer of children’s products, safety is our top priority at Crayola.  Although our products are nontoxic, we do not recommend using them to make lipstick, eyeliner or other make-up and strongly discourage their use in this manner. They are not designed, tested or approved for this purpose.

Popular beauty vlogger Rachel Levin, who posts videos on YouTube as Rclbeauty101, recently posted a video called “DIY: Make Eyeliner Out of Colored Pencils!” She has 2.2 million subscribers on her channel, and the video has been viewed 1.6 million times.

Other makeup vloggers have also followed suit, posting their own videos of how to make eyeliner out of Crayola colored pencils:

It’s unclear if Crayola’s warning was a direct response to Levin sharing this tip with her large audience. But note to all DIY makeup enthusiasts: Perhaps it’s best to keep the crayons in the box and away from your precious face.
