Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump may have lied about his charitable donations in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Documents provided to the New York Daily News by City Controller Scott Stringer could not verify claims that Trump ever actually gave money through mid-2002 to either the Twin Towers Fund or the New York City Public/Private Initiatives Inc., as he previously claimed.
“For the periods covered by the audits, we did not find any record of a donation from Trump himself or a Trump entity,” Stringer’s office wrote in response to a public-records request by the Daily News.
In late September 2001, Trump pledged $10,000 to the Twin Towers Fund on the air with Howard Stern.
Another review by the Daily News of the Donald J. Trump Foundation found no donations to either charity through 2014. Trump did in 2006 give $1,000 to actor Tom Cruise‘s New York Rescue Workers Detoxification Fund.
In April 2016, the Trump Foundation, which operates without any money from Trump himself, donated $100,000 to the 9/11 Museum amid attacks from Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas).
Trump’s campaign also implied that he donated to the American Red Cross after Sept. 11, though there is not yet evidence that he did so.
