Hillary Clinton doesn’t want Americans to forget one of her opponent’s most controversial moments on the campaign trail as they consider their votes.
With the election only two weeks away, Clinton’s campaign has released an ad focusing on the story of Captain Humayun Khan, who was killed in Iraq in 2004 while serving the U.S. Army. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for saving many of his fellow soldiers from a suicide bomber by sacrificing himself.
His father, Khizr Khan, accompanied by his wife, Ghazala, spoke at the Democratic National Convention in July to challenge Trump’s proposed ban on Muslims coming into the U.S. by sharing his son’s story.
Trump responded to Khan’s speech by attacking Ghazala and raising the assumption she did not speak because of her Muslim religion.
“If you look at his wife, she was standing there,” he said to ABC. “She had nothing to say. She probably, maybe she wasn’t allowed to have anything to say. You tell me.”
Trumps remarks sparked considerable backlash from both Democrats and Republicans who felt he was out of line attacking a family who had lost a son in service to the U.S. military. Ghazala Khan responded in an op-ed in the Washington Post, saying she didn’t speak because of her grief, not because of her religion.
The new Clinton ad resurfaces the issue, with Captain Khan’s story narrated by his father. He asks a powerful question that sets the tone for the entire video. “Would my son have a place in your America?”
