President Obama is popular again—and that’s good news for Hillary Clinton

He's still heavily unpopular among Republicans.

President Barack Obama has his mojo back.

A new CNN/ORC poll has Obama’s approval rating at 55 percent, matching the high points of his second term. A Gallup poll conducted over roughly the same time period puts Obama’s approval rating nearly as high, at 54 percent. On average, Obama’s approval rating remains in the green, at 51 percent across all recent polls.

Obama’s rising poll numbers, up 10 points from a year ago, are primarily due to a boost from Democrats and independents. Democrats give the president an 89 percent approval rating, while 56 percent of independents approve of Obama’s job as president. Republicans, however, remain largely unchanged at 13 percent approval.

Obama’s high approval rating comes on the heels of the latest job numbers, which show unemployment has fallen to its lowest level since 1973.

The news of Obama’s rising popularity is likely sweetest to Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, who served as Obama’s secretary of state during his first term and is campaigning largely on policies that align with or build on the Obama administration. Donald Trump, the Republican nominee, has cast himself as the anti-Obama.

Obama, meanwhile, has just 105 days left in the White House.
