Natalie Elle Woods was sitting in a restaurant in Texas when she heard people at a nearby table saying homophobic things about their nephew. As a queer woman, Woods responded to the incident by doing something rather big-hearted—she paid for their food.
According to the Huffington Post, Woods overheard the family talking about how disgusted they were that their nephew had come out as gay and that they would pray to Jesus to “cure” his homosexuality. Woods, inspired by Michelle Obama’s words from the 2016 Democratic National Convention—”When they go low, we go high“—decided to pick up the table’s $49 tab and left a handwritten note on the receipt.
The note reads, “Happy holidays from the very gay, very liberal table sitting next to you. Jesus made me this way. P.S. be accepting of your family.”
