Even Antarctica is participating in the Women’s March

Penguins are reported to have participated.

Although the official Women’s March on Washington occurs in D.C., women all over the world have organized their own “sister marches” in at least 673 other cities. Even Antarctica joined the cause Saturday, making all seven continents officially represented. 

At least 30 women participated in Antarctica’s sister march, in Paradise Bay. The entire group consisted of both men and women, who ranged in age from 24 to 87, and traveled from more than six countries.

Event organizer Linda Zunas, a 42 year-old from Oakland, California, told the Independent she was motivated by Donald Trump’s proposed plan to reverse the environmental policies of Barack Obama.

“I set it up because I wanted to participate in the Women’s March,” she said. “I spent a month after the election mourning the impending damage to the earth that will be done. I felt like I needed to do something to be part of the global movement.”

On Twitter, Zunas clarified that the march in Antarctica was specifically pro-peace and pro-environment.

Paradise Bay, a usually remote area, is known for it’s Gentoo penguin population and Weddell seals, so the protesters carried signs that said slogans like “penguins for peace” and “seals for science.” Zunas even tweeted to one viewer that penguins actually participated,.  


Users on Twitter expressed their amazement about the march in Antarctica and the fact that officially all seven continents are hosting Women’s Marches.

Zunas said on Twitter that the marchers’ internet capabilities are very limited while they are in Paradise Bay but to expect more photos of people and penguins marching when they return home on Thursday.
