A mesmerizing, swirling, vortex has opened up in the massive Lake Texoma reservoir in Texas.

What’s causing this phenomenon?

Unlike the natural drains in the Lost Lake of Oregon, this vortex is man-made. Due to the recent heavy rain and flooding in Texas, the water levels in Lake Texoma were getting too high. The Army Corps opened up flood gates in the Denison Dam to drain some of the water. That created a whirlpool, just like draining the water out of a bathtub.

According to Business Insider, the vortex was up to eight feet wide in early June—large enough to swallow a boat—during the heaviest of the rain storms. Now it’s now only about two to three feet wide.

Boat traffic is being averted from the vortex to avoid any accidents.
