Why, oh why, can't these be real movies?

We’ve loved artist Joe Phillips for a long time because of his pinup-style renditions of beefcake superheroes and Joeboys, his Kickstarter-backed homoerotic original artbook. Now, fresh from winning a prestigious Inkpot Award at Comic-Con, Phillips has shared his latest fanart project with his Facebook followers: a gorgeous series of posters for Marvel and DC superhero movies of yore, starring iconic actors like Clark Gable and Elizabeth Taylor as the heroes of the silver screen.

Not only is the artwork stunning, but Phillips’ casting choices are spot-on. His casting for Superman alone makes us want a time-travel device so we can remedy the past and make this movie a reality. Plus, Grant and Hepburn as Batman and Robin! Lucille Ball as Scarlet Witch! Young Peter Lorre as Hellboy sidekick Abe Sapien! Take a look:

We would watch every one of these movies. It’s nice to be reminded that we live in an era where our biggest celebrities are eager to tackle roles like Iron Man and Wonder Woman, but we pine for a way to turn back time and make Gregory Peck’s Superman, Roz Russell’s Lois Lane, and Yul Brynner’s Lex Luthor a reality.

While Phillips is currently selling his series as prints, they’re already almost gone, so be sure to watch his Facebook page for a follow-up set featuring a whole crew of new Hollywood icons.
