Stargate: Atlantis is the latest long-canceled TV series to be resurrected by a Kickstarter campaign, although it won’t be returning to TV.

The beloved sci-fi show is getting a sixth season in comic book format, much like the “season 8” continuation of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. According to the Kickstarter page, the plan is to model the new Stargate: Atlantis comics after a season of television, with episodic arcs, ongoing subplots, and season finales.

While the comics don’t appear to have any input from the show’s original creators, the Kickstarter team includes professional writers and artists who have worked for Marvel and DC, and on similar tie-in comics like Battlestar Galactica. This sounds like an ideal route for fans who have already finished reading the vast amount of unofficial Stargate fanfiction online, and are hungry for more.

When Stargate: Atlantis was cancelled in 2009, many fans were dissatisfied with the ending, which saw the Atlantis team return to Earth and land their flying city off the coast of San Francisco. For a while there was some hope for a sequel movie, but those plans conclusively fell through when MGM went bankrupt.

Last year, we heard that director Roland Emmerich was working on a reboot of the original Stargate movie, but the TV franchise is definitely a thing of the past. Six years after Stargate Atlantis was canceled, a comic book series is a welcome surprise, which is undoubtedly why the Kickstarter had no trouble reaching its $10,000 goal.
