Will Sony be the first to release a female-led superhero movie?

Which female superhero movie will come first, Wonder Woman or Black Widow?

Actually, the answer may well be neither, because Sony is reportedly making a female-led Spider-Man spinoff.

Deadline reports that in Sony’s schedule for the Spider-Man franchise, a 2017 release date has been set aside for a female superhero movie. Before that, the next confirmed movie in the franchise is Sinister Six, a supervillain team-up movie that is slated for November 2016. (Incidentally, it’s highly likely that all six members of the Sinister Six will be men, if the original comics are anything to go by.)

Possible contenders for this female superhero spinoff include Black Cat (who appeared briefly in The Amazing Spider-Man 2), Spider-Woman, and Spider-Girl. Jessica Drew, the best-known Spider-Woman, would probably be the smartest choice.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was the lowest-earning Spider-Man movie of the franchise, leading to Sony reshuffling their schedule so they could make Sinister Six first and push Amazing Spider-Man 3 all the way back to 2018.

This indicates that Sony may be making a female superhero movie out of desperation for something fresh. The Spider-Man brand is still a huge money-spinner, but after releasing five Spider-Man movies in 12 years, audiences seem to be tiring of Peter Parker.

Sony is already trying to solve this problem by branching out into new spinoffs like the Sinister Six, so why not a female superhero movie too?
