Speculation among fans that Pegg gained a role on the anticipated movie has gone around since he was spotted on the Star Wars: Episode VII set in Abu Dhabi last month, and at the time, a source told IGN that Pegg was shooting scenes for J.J. Abrams, who already directed Pegg in Star Trek, Star Trek Into Darkness, and Mission: Impossible III.
Pegg has played down any suggestion that he would be in the Star Wars movies, saying that he’d just love to watch it in theaters. Pegg is famously a Star Wars fan and even incorporated some of that into his character on the British series Spaced.
However, in a recent interview with Vulture, Pegg was spinning a slightly different tune after Star Trek Into Darkness co-star Benedict Cumberbatch implied that he was a part of the cast at Comic-Con last weekend.
“Well, J.J. uses me in different roles, and we’re good friends,” Pegg told Vulture. “I feel like my face in Star Wars would pop people out of the movie. Look, I love Star Wars, and I don’t want people to watch and go, Oh, there’s Simon Pegg’s face. The film is cleverly cast with these amazing, unknown actors.”
It’s the comments about Pegg’s face that’s leaving fans intrigued. He reiterated the part about not wanting Star Wars fans to be distracted by his face, but he doesn’t full-out say that he himself won’t be in the movie. It’s leading some to think he could be voicing a character or be disguised in make-up.
And having Pegg in the films, even if it’s just his voice, probably wouldn’t be any more distracting than seeing Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford reprise their roles.
