Shelter 2 is a game about a mama lynx raising her kittens.

Technically, they’re called cubs, but come on. They look like kittens. And the upcoming indie game is about keeping them safe.

Might and Delight is a Swedish indie studio founded in Stockholm in 2010. In August 2013 Might and Delight released Shelter, a fresh take on the survival game genre. Shelter is a game about a mama badger protecting her brood against the elements, like forest fires, raging rivers, and predators. Shelter received praise for its art direction and emotional impact, and faced criticism for some wonky mechanics and short length.

Shelter 2 makes a mama lynx the protagonist. This first footage trailer shows the mama hunting food for her litter of cubs, with a few shots of a nighttime level in which she has to keep her babies in a certain radius or they’ll get lost in the darkness.

Some critics of Shelter noted how stunned they felt when one of their badger cubs died. Shelter 2 has kittens. Can you even imagine?

Tell us that footage doesn’t feel like an antidote to all the misery in gaming right now, an affirmation of the sort of creativity that the video game industry can currently support.

Shelter 2 will be released for PC and Mac in February.
