Grand Theft Auto V gamers on the PC version who are using mods in the single-player mode of the game were not intentionally banned by Rockstar Games from GTA Online.
Complaints about bans began rolling their way onto the GTA V Steam community last week. PC gamers believed that use of mods in the single-player campaign was responsible for getting them banned from GTA Online, which touched a nerve with the PC gaming community as a whole. In a Rockstar Newswire post on Thursday, the developer stated the bans were nothing it had enacted on purpose.
“Recent updates to GTAV PC had an unintended effect,” reads the statement, “of making unplayable certain single player modifications. This was not intentional, no one has been banned for using single player modifications, and you should not worry about being banned or being relegated to the cheater pool just for using single player PC mods.”
“Our primary focus is on protecting GTA Online,” continues the statement, “against modifications that could give players an unfair advantage, disrupt gameplay, or cause griefing. It also bears mentioning that because game mods are by definition unauthorized, they may be broken by technical updates, cause instability, or affect your game in other unforeseen ways.”
“Unforeseen ways” might equate to “players using FOV mods being accidentally banned from GTA Online.” Rockstar Games did not respond to our request for clarification by publication time.
We certainly hope the lack of specificity as to an explanation for the recent string of GTA Online bans doesn’t discourage the further development and use of mods in GTA V on PC, because the awesome mod videos continue to pour out of the PC gaming community.
