It’s finally happening.
If you know characters Ness and Lucas from Super Smash Bros., you may be unaware that both originated from the Mother series of games, known as Earthbound in the United States. Well, the first Mother game (which didn’t star Ness) never came out in the U.S.—that is, until now.
Mother has had a weird history of trying to make its way to the states. It was released in Japan in 1989, and was actually fully localized and translated by Nintendo of America in the early ’90’s. For whatever reason, Nintendo decided to not release it. Interestingly, Mother 2 did come out in the U.S., but not Mother 3.
The new release of Mother will be known as Earthbound Beginnings in the U.S., and amazingly is available right now on the Wii U Nintendo eShop. Earthbound is a fan favorite for being unlike any other Japanese role-playing game out there. It has a whimsical sense of humor, filled with many pop-culture references, and memorable characters.
