The live-action Attack On Titan movies look like they’re going to be an alarming mix of gut-wrenching horror and completely over-the-top melodramatic acting. In other words, an appropriate successor to the anime series.

After a brief teaser released back in April, this new full-length trailer gives us a better look at how the upcoming duo of live-action movies will reimagine Attack on Titan. We get to see more of the titans (which look as horrifying as you might hope), the post-apocalyptic landscape and the Survey Corps, although fans of the anime might be disappointed by the effects used for the steam-powered 3D Maneuver Gear.

This equipment plays a major part in the story, allowing members of the Survey Corps to swing through the streets and tackle the titans at eye-level. Unfortunately, the live-action version leaves something to be desired. A couple of the characters basically look like they’re flying in front of a green screen and a wind machine, which isn’t an ideal effect for a stunt that should be on a par with Spider-Man‘s web-slingers.

Some fans are also annoyed by the fact that Mikasa is shown kissing someone in the trailer, although it’s worth remembering that the live-action movies were always going to make some major changes to the Attack on Titan canon. The main cast only includes six characters from the original manga, joined by several completely new names. Under those circumstances, it may be a waste of time to point out discrepancies in their characterization.
