This is a very alternate universe.

Superheroes just continue getting darker and edgier, and that’s all the more evident with the new trailer for Justice League: Gods and Monsters.

Just how edgy is this new Justice League movie? Well, Superman is the son of General Zod, Wonder Woman is the daughter of Ares, and Batman isn’t Bruce Wayne but a vampire. Oh, and it also seems that Superman was raised by a Hispanic family this time around.

The trailer even opens up with “50 dead” in a massacre.

The only saving grace is that it’s being produced by Bruce Timm. He’s the man behind such greats as Batman: The Animated Series and the Justice League animated television show from the mid-aughts. It even features his very distinct art style.

A DC animated movie with such dark themes isn’t entirely unprecedented. Last year’s Batman: Assault on Arkham was marked with violence and sexual content. Even the new Batman: Arkham Knight video game will be getting an M for mature rating.

The movie will hit retailers on July 28.
