Gotham has cast the perfect actor to play the Penguin’s father: Paul Reubens, best known for playing the character Pee-wee Herman.

Reubens also had a cameo as Oswald Cobblepot’s father in Batman Returns in 1992, a classic Tim Burton film that saw a wealthy couple abandon their baby in the river because he was born with hands that resembled flippers. Hence, the Penguin.

Gangster Oswald Cobblepot, played by Robin Lord Taylor, is one of Gotham‘s many, many villains. Conveniently, he also bears a certain resemblance to Paul Reubens.

This makes Reubens an ideal casting choice on several levels. He allows Gotham to make a cool little reference back to the ’90s Batman franchise, and he’s also famous for playing another creepy, bow-tie-wearing character—much like the Penguin himself.
