Plenty of scenes get cut when adapting from a book to a show, but even everything that’s filmed doesn’t always make it into Game of Thrones.

HBO has released two deleted scenes featured on the fourth season DVD and Blu-ray set Tuesday, and while we can see why they were ultimately cut from the show, they still carry an emotional punch—not only for those involved, but also for the people watching.

The first of them is more of an extended scene then a deleted one. Set during “The Lion and the Rose” (and before the Purple Wedding), it starts off with Tyrion Lannister dismissing Shae and sending her to Pentos to protect her. Instead of just cutting to the next scene, a conversation between Shae and Bronn takes place.

He tries to comfort her but offers her a piece of advice as well—one that might have ultimately sealed her fate. Had it been included, show fans might not have been as shocked to see her betray Tyrion.

On the other hand, the deleted scene from “The Mountain and the Viper” shows character depth, not more intel about a course of action. Hurt after Ser Jorah Mormont’s betrayal, Daenerys Targaryen looks to Missandei for comfort. She’s calm and collected in both personal and political matters—even with the threats on her life—but here she demonstrates that she’s human (albeit with dragons), just like everyone else.
