The sad truth about the ‘Hawkgirl’ TV series

This rumor was fun while it lasted, but sadly it isn't true.

Bad news, Hawkgirl fans: The CW isn’t working on a solo spinoff show after all.

Spoiler TV reported this week that the DC Comics superhero had a solo series “in very early stages of development” at the CW, but a CW representative has since told the Daily Dot that this is “just a rumor.”

Hawkgirl is due to be introduced in Legends of Tomorrow next year, a superhero team spinoff from the universe of Arrow and The Flash. Ciara Renée will be playing Hawkgirl—also known as Kendra Saunders, a young woman who discovers that she is the reincarnation of an ancient warrior. You can briefly see her in action during this early trailer for the show:

While Hawkgirl is a cool character, it wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense to introduce her as part of an ensemble show and a future solo series at the same time, especially when the CW will be juggling three DC spinoffs at once.

This may sound overly pessimistic, but it’s worth remembering how long it took for any TV network to pick up a female superhero as famous as Supergirl, never mind a relatively obscure character who will require CGI wings in every episode. Legends of Tomorrow may spawn another DC spinoff or two, but only after audiences have been properly introduced to its characters.
