A new Kickstarter campaign wants to bring back a classic PlayStation classic game, and in doing so reinvigorate the car-combat-racing genre.

Studio Caged Element has launched a Kickstarter for GRIP, a modern take on old futuristic combat racers like Rollcage.

How close is GRIP to Rollcage? Caged Element boasts that the level designer and PC programmer who originally worked on Rollcage will be working on GRIP, so things ought to be pretty darn close.

The unique part about GRIP is the new way cars can race. Cars are able to drive both right-side-up and upside-down. This allows tracks to be incredibly varied and not limited to a single plane.

What would a futuristic racing game be without some good music to back it up? The team is also working closely with many artists to bring some catchy tunes to the gameplay. Artists like Technical Itch, Sol Invicto, and Dom & Roland are helping with the score.

Backers will need to donate a minimum of $16 to get a digital copy of the game. If GRIP reaches its $500,000 funding goal, Caged Element expects the game to come out in December 2016.
