Sure, Friendship Is Magic, but so is charity, which explains why the latest nationwide blood drive has a very unique sponsor: bronies.
Bronies for Good is a charitable organization that originated in 2010 on Ponychan.net, an image community for My Little Pony fans. Its charitable acts include auctions and the production of several albums featuring covers of My Little Pony songs. In 2012, the organization raised over $10,000 for orphaned children in Uganda as part of Safe Project.
Their latest effort is the blood drive, which lasts through Oct. 5, and it’s the second such drive for Bronies for Good. It is dubbed the “Nurse Redheart Roundup,” named after the medically attentive pony Nurse Redheart from the series. During their first drive in 2010, Bronies donated a combined 17 liters of blood.
“With blood transfusion and plasma supplies at records lows and demand ever increasing, it is time once more for everyone to give their best and help out many of those in dire need!” the organization said in a blog post.
Bronies are encouraged to donate blood through any official outlet, such as the American Red Cross. Those registering their donations through the site will be entered into drawings for several prizes, such as unused items from charity auctions.
Bronies for Good is just one of several organizations set up to perform charitable acts using the community as a backdrop. In May, the Brony Thank You Project, which regularly donates to several charities, became a legitimate nonprofit organization thanks to crowdfunding.
