In YouTube Right Now, the Daily Dot looks at videos that catch our eyes, push our buttons, and move our dials—and that you've just got to watch. Right now!
Meet Skifcha, the latest Internet sensation.
He’s a four-year-old cat from Russia. But there are cats all over YouTube. What makes Skifcha so special, you ask?
Glasses, my friends, wide-framed paper glasses, taped to Skifcha’s head.
Add some film-school-moody atmosphere in the videos he’s featured in, maybe a dubstep soundtrack, and you’ve got Web delight in 40 seconds or less.
The latest Skifcha video to delight the digital denizens is “Stereo Skifcha,” with 3D treatment.
(If 3D gives you headaches, try the version on Vimeo.)
Owned by graphic artist and amateur filmmaker Denis Borisovich, Skifcha first caught the eye of the Internet eight months ago, when Borisovich uploaded his version of “Dramatic Chipmunk,” where Skifcha gave the video meme’s trademark sudden, swerving stare while wearing the now-infamous paper glasses.
That Vimeo video has been viewed over 900,000 times to date. Prompted by its success, Borisovich made another video titled “Skifcha/sky” which showcases Skifcha with another cat, walking along a dusty road to the tune of orchestra music. Both cats wear the paper glasses and are triumphantly lifted into the air by a male human at the end of the short.
Skifcha is exponentially more popular on Vimeo than on YouTube, where videos of him struggle to break into five-digit views. The addition of dubstep, though, might fare better given YouTube’s fascination with the musical genre.
