The Hater: Why a horrible .xxx domain ad makes us rethink life

In The Hater, Daily Dot Millennial analyst Jordan Valinsky finds something to dislike in everything.

ICM Registry, the company marketing the controversial .xxx suffix for Web domains, released the world’s worst commercial this week to promote the Internet’s new red-light district.

The commercial, shown below (it’s safe for work, though not for life), is threatened to run for five weeks unless someone takes action for the betterment of humanity.

In the ad, boss who has a face for radio, a voice for books, and a better arm than a baseball pitcher orders her well-bearded assistant to find out who is buying the .xxx address. Also: scantily clad women.

Interested domain buyers can log on to www.buy.xxx to see if their address is for purchase during the general availability period that begins in early December.

Currently, .xxx is still in a “landrush” stage, meaning that only adult-entertainment companies can buy .xxx domains. Although sales numbers have not been released yet, ICM Registry has already made $13 million from the selling .xxx domains during previous release stages.

The .xxx suffix has been dogged by controversy since it was first proposed last decade. Now critics say the main beneficiaries of .xxx’s release are cybersquatters who will snap up names—porny or not—and hold them for ransom.

If you were thinking about buying a porny version of ICM Registry’s domain name in a bid to stop this awful, awful ad campaign, though, give up—someone already thought of that.
