YouTube right now! Park Jae Sang's “Gangnam Style”
In YouTube Right Now, the Daily Dot looks at videos that catch our eyes, push our buttons, and move our dials—and that you’ve just got to watch. Right now!
South Korean hip-hop MC Park Jae Sang (PSY) has produced what just might be the most dynamic and downright bonkers music video of all time.
"Gangnam Style," a reference to the glitzy, über-social neighborhood in South Korea's capital city Seoul, is a 4:15 tidal wave of premiere posturing and decadent allure. Paced over a hard-charging electro beat that barely comes up for air, the track has enough energy to replace your daily dose of coffee this morning.
Posted to YouTube July 15 and popularized by Reddit and Gawker, the video has already accrued nearly nine million views, most of which have come from Sang's native South Korea, where he's considered somewhat of an underground king.
This video, however, has very little to do with the underground culture. Rather, it's the type of track to make you feel like you're cruising down the boulevard in a black stretch limousine, feet on the seat screaming through the sunroof "Money ain't a thing." In other words, it’s like a South Korean version of LMFAO.
Just how awesome is PSY's "Gangnam Style”? We've counted the ways.
0:06: The Korean kid on the beach doing the Michael Jackson
0:34: Sang's ability to woo two women into dancing through a wind tunnel of trash with him
0:42: Sang's ability to woo two women into dancing through a wind tunnel of snow with him
0:50: Sang's distinguished confidence in a robin's egg blue towel
1:05: Sang's blatant disregard for the rules on a bus
1:27: Whatever you'd call that dance Sang does between those women working out
2:05: This hot dog-colored dude who could be either the villain or the ally
2:22: The back-and-forth subway sequence
2:35: The sly-dog shoes and shorts look Sang's employing
2:55: Sang's casual Texas two step
3:15: This, just this.
That's 11 sequences that separate Sang's video from the next great "Gangnam Style"-style music video, Jay-Z's "Big Pimpin'." Park Jae Sang, play on, playa,. Go on, brush your shoulders off.
