Giuliana Rancic, a prominent cable-TV personality, announced she has breast cancer on the Today show this morning. Her fans responded with an outpouring of support and get-well wishes.

Rancic, who hosts E News and stars in her own reality show on Style Network, told Today anchor Ann Curry she was diagnosed in August and will undergo surgery and radiation later this month. She was diagnosed with cancer following a mammogram.

While the American Cancer Society doesn’t normally recommend mammograms for women under 40, her doctor insisted because she’d undergone in-vitro-fertilization treatments, Rancic said. (The link between IVF and cancer is hotly debated.)

The 37-year-old’s name became a global trending topic on Twitter with her fans wishing her a quick recovery. Topsy, a social-measuring website, tracked more than 4,000 tweets since this morning.

“Thoughts and prayers are with Giuliana Rancic,” tweeted Jenny Deakin, a fan from the United Kingdom.

“Hope all gets better and she makes a speedy recovery from this all!,” another fan tweeted.

A lot of fans expressed their alarm at a cancer diagnosis in a woman her age.

“Sending my love and prayers to Giuliana Rancic. Shes so young; thank God her doctor was so persistent and made her get a mammogram,” tweeted @YourRandomTweet.
