Pop-punk band Blink 182 takes fans by surprise, promoting videos which use their music illegally — usually frowned upon and or taken down for copyright infringement — by turning them into a montage video for their new single ‘Up All Night”.

The “Up All Night Fan Montage” is also part of AT&T’s “Blink-182 Film Festival You Didn’t Know You Entered.”

Blink 182 bassist Mark Hoppus explained in the Film Festival award video: “Normally in these situations, you would have been served by a letter from our lawyer, the content would have been taken down, and we would have seen you rot in jail. But instead of that, this time we wanted to try something different.”

Awards were handed out for various categories, including “Best Fan Video That Almost Resulted in Manslaughter” (winner Bfugal), “Most Excessive Use of Fisheye Lens” (winner ComplicatedFilms), and “Most Appearances in a Public Restroom” (winner MartinsBall).

Some fans on YouTube were left wondering why YouTuber Cobus, wasn’t included in the “Up All Night Fan Montage” video. Cobis’ play-along drum videos — including his cover of Blink182’s “Feeling This” — are hugely popular among viewers.

Writes boxbhinkmart, “cobus is probably one of the best youtube drummers, if not the best. He has over 100 covers of popular songs and he makes them his own.”

For the most part, YouTubers enjoyed Blink 182’s new take on fan remixes and copyright issues. Writes matt41613, “THIS is why I love blink 182. keepin it real, about the music. Screw the big names, the labels, and the STUPID copyright laws. This video is about being a fan. Thank you blink 182 for being cool and for keeping it real.”
