With the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 having dominated the headlines for much of 2016, it’s easy to forget the rest of Samsung’s Galaxy alphabet. But it seems the mobile giant has made a New Year’s resolution to turn over a new leaf: Monday morning, Samsung announced three new entries in its Galaxy A line: the Galaxy A7, A5, and A3.
While the 2017 editions of the A7 and A5 will boast some similar specs—sharing a 1.9GHz octa-core processor, 32GB of storage, and dual 16-megapixel cameras on the front and rear of the device—there are slight differentiations across the line. The A7 boasts the largest screen (sporting a 5.7-inch 1080p Super AMOLED display) and biggest battery (at 3,600 mAh). The midsize A5’s display is only 5.2 inches, and its battery is 3,000 mAh.
The baby of the family, the Galaxy A3, knocks all the specs down one notch further. While still an octa-core, its processor clocks in at 1.6GHz, and it has a 2,350 mAh battery. It has half the built-in storage of the other two (so only 16GB), but it’s got the same MicroSD support as the others: expandable up to 256GB. The cameras, too, are stripped down: The rear-facing camera is a 13-megapixel number, but the front-facing camera is only 8MP. Accordingly, it packs this all into a smaller package, too: The A3 has a 4.7-inch Super AMOLED screen with a less high-def resolution of only 720p.
All three phones will run Android’s Marshmallow OS (version 6.0.16). The new Galaxy A line will officially launch later this month, with price points rumored in the $300-450 range.
